15 Days To Freedom Blog Challenge - Day 3 - A Musical Cake

Sugarpaste Strawberries and sheet music

Today I would share a this cake I made the other week for a gorgeous Valentine's Day wedding at the beautiful Elmore Court in Elmore just outside Gloucester.

The wedding couple approached The Vanilla Pod Bakery via email in November 2014. I then met them for a lovely tasting and design consultation at the Queen's Hotel in Cheltenham. I hold all my consultations there, it is the perfect location and the staff are lovely. (I am very excited for the hotel's forthcoming renovation too).

Anyway back to the cake. The couple had a music theme for their wedding with hints of red so we set about designing the wedding cake.  I drew a few sketches before the couple choose the final version which fitted their budget and theme the best.

The cake was a large stacked three tier designed to feed 120. It was decorated with printed edible sheets of music and finished with lots of little handmade sugarpaste strawberries. The music sheets were the actual scores of the music played throughout the day, a lovely touch.

The cake had three different flavours and the couple choice a delicious Belgium Chocolate Truffle, seriously Lemon Drizzle Curd and a classic Victoria Sandwich. All I can say is #yum!

The making of the cake
The cake was made over four days. The the strawberries were made on day one, can guess how many there were?. (answer below). The sponges were baked and filled on day two, then covered with chocolate  ganache on day three. Chocolate  ganache is great medium for cake designers, it really helps create wonderfully sharp edges. The three tiers were then covered with ivory sugarpaste and decorated with printed edible sheet music.  The cake was not assembled until I got to the venue and set it up on the table.

When I got to the venue, I thought the room looked amazing. It was set out with wooden benches and the tables were decorated with hand made music sheet paper flowers and red table runners with the odd red love heart helium balloon. My photographs do not do it justice.  Also at the windows were handmade origami cranes, there were hundreds of them all made by the couple. It was so beautiful.

P.S.  Did you have a go at guessing the number of strawberries, well there were just over 100! That's a lot of strawberries!
